Intern Alumni Champion
Ayomide 'Florian' Nurudeen (Intern 2021)
What are you studying/ what did you study at University?
I am currently a 4th year medical student at the Univeristy of Leeds, I completed the internship over the summer after my 3rd year.
Why did you apply for the internship?
I applied for the internship to get more involved in the process of research. At university, although we learn about research, it was in a simulated environment, repeating what previous years had done. From hearing about the internship from one of my peers, I felt this internship would be a good way to develop my research skills and become more of an independent researcher, getting involved in novel projects.
What was the Project you were involved with when attending the internship scheme?
I was involved in a project that was hosted by Loughborough University. This project was centred around utilising data gathered from middle distance runners and controls. I was tasked with finding out which functional muscle groups determined vertical jumping performance.
What stood out to you the most as an intern?
When I began the internship, I was given a tour of some of the labs at the university, and I was honestly so wowed by the range of equipment and technology that Loughborough had. Having the opportunity to use some of the equipment including a magnetic stimulator really made the internship for me, as this was something I feel not many people get the opportunity to be a part of. I was also amazed at how passionate about research everyone involved in the internship was and how kind and willing to support you they were.
What skills did the internship equip you with?
I was able to develop my knowledge of the processes that occur around research. I was also able to develop my interpersonal skills as I worked with lecturers, PhD students and project participants. The skill I feel I developed over the course of internship was my data analysis, a key aspect of research.
Why would you recommend the internship?
I would recommend the internship especially as a medical student as it gives you the opportunity to go beyond your curriculum and become more of an independent researcher. The internship also provides a great way to network with peers and people with more experience in the field which is always a great thing.
What are your achievements since the internship scheme?
I am hoping that the work I contributed to during the internship can be further developed and maybe one day in the near future lead to a publication.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years’ time I hope to have graduated medical school and be using the internship as well as other experiences I have gained to begin my journey of becoming a Sports and Exercise Medical Doctor.
