George Young (Intern 2019)
What are you studying/ what did you study at University?
I studied BSc in Sports Rehabilitation at University of the South of England. I am studying Nutrition, Physical Activity and Public Health MSc at Bristol University.
Why did you apply for the internship?
To get involved with a research project I had a passion about (arthritis and exercise) and to help me decide whether research was the right path for me.
What was the Project you were involved with when attending the internship scheme?
I was involved in a project at the University of Bath that was working on developing an digital app that would support those with sporting knee injuries to manage symptoms of osteoarthritis.
What stood out to you the most as an intern?
I was given many opportunities to network with other researchers at the University of Bath that were working on other projects, as well as being able to network with other interns, some of which have become good friends.
What skills did the internship equip you with?
It allowed me to develop qualitative research skills, including interviewing participants, transcribing and coding data, and using NVivo.
Why would you recommend the internship?
It is a great way to spend eight weeks, it hones the skills you have, allows you time to reflect on past learning and provides insight into research and academia.
What are your achievements since the internship scheme?
I have been involved in two publications as the result of my internship, and I have been able to develop my private practice to include spects of care specific to those with chronic pain such as those with arthritis.
If working, what’s your occupation and where?
I am a self-employed Sports Rehabilitator (BASRaT-org).
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I am exploring the possibility of a PhD, however I am also looking to develop my practive to offer targetted rehabilitation for osteoarthritis, Axial SpA and other joint related pain and mobility issues.
